About CDF Academy

A community shaped by faith, sustained by families, and rooted in South Florida.

For over fifteen years, Comunidad de Fe Ministries has walked alongside homeschooling parents who want their children to learn deeply, love generously, and live faithfully.

Our Story

It began with three families and one borrowed church classroom.

In the fall of 2010, three homeschooling mothers from Comunidad de Fe Church in Hialeah Gardens sat at a kitchen table and asked a simple question: "What if we taught our children together one day a week?" They wanted their kids to have friendships rooted in shared faith, to be challenged by teachers gifted in subjects where they themselves felt limited, and to belong to something larger than the four walls of their homes.

That first year, eleven children gathered in a single borrowed classroom for art, science labs, and group reading. By the second year, twenty-eight families had joined. By the fifth, we had outgrown the church and moved into our current campus on NW 77th Avenue. Today, CDF Academy serves over two hundred students across four developmental stages, supported by a faculty of twenty-three credentialed instructors and a parent community that spans three counties.

What has not changed is the founding conviction: the home is the school. Parents are the primary educators. We exist to come alongside them — never to replace them, never to compete with the discipling work that happens around the dinner table and on Saturday mornings.

What We Believe

Five convictions that shape everything we do.

i

Scripture is sufficient.

The Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God — fully trustworthy in all that it affirms and the final authority for what we believe and how we live. Every subject we teach is examined in its light.

ii

Children are image-bearers.

Every child entrusted to us was made in the image of God, knit together with intention, and given gifts and capacities we are privileged to help unfold. We refuse to treat any student as a number.

iii

Parents are the primary educators.

Deuteronomy 6 places the responsibility for teaching squarely on parents. We assist; we do not replace. Our enrichment program is structured to honor and strengthen that calling, not to supplant it.

iv

Community is essential.

Children are not meant to grow up in isolation, and parents are not meant to homeschool alone. A vibrant, multi-generational community of faith is the soil in which both faith and learning flourish.

v

Excellence honors God.

Whatever we do — phonics drills, watercolor lessons, algebra problems, sandwich crusts cut for a kindergartner — we do it with the kind of care that reflects the One we serve. Mediocrity is never a Christian virtue.

vi

Truth, beauty, and goodness belong together.

We pursue not only what is true (mathematics, science, logic), but also what is beautiful (literature, art, music) and what is good (character, service, worship). A complete education forms the whole person.

Leadership

Herma Davila & the founding director team.

Herma Davila has served as Executive Director of CDF Academy since its founding in 2010. A former public school teacher of fourteen years and the mother of four homeschooled children — three of whom are now university graduates and one serving in vocational ministry — she brings both professional expertise and the lived experience of having walked this road herself.

She is supported by a team of three program directors (Foundations, Explorers/Voyagers, and Scholars), an admissions coordinator, an enrichment director, and a board of seven parent representatives who provide governance oversight. Every member of our leadership team is an active homeschooling parent or has homeschooled their own children from K through 12.

Our faculty — twenty-three instructors as of the current academic year — are drawn from working professionals, retired educators, artists, scientists, and ministry leaders. Each is vetted for content expertise, alignment with our statement of faith, and the rare gift of teaching children well.
